RemoFirst vs Deel for South Africa
Deel publishes $599 per employee per month. RemoFirst publishes $199. The question is not which is cheaper. It is what the difference buys, and whether you will use it.
Deel buys you an ecosystem: a talent marketplace and applicant tracking, a device programme, in-house visa support, an HRIS, an open API and scale. RemoFirst buys you employment with the fewest published conditions of the two.
Neither names a South African entity on its own pages. RemoFirst explains its model; Deel does not address it at country level.

Compare providersWhere they actually differ
Cost, and what the gap is for
At $199 against $599, RemoFirst is roughly a third of the price. The terms around the fee, and the deposit, widen the gap further.
RemoFirst states there are no setup, onboarding or termination fees, no annual contracts and no employee minimums. Those are the cleaner published terms of the two, and they matter most for a first South African hire where you want the exit open. It publishes no deposit position.
Deel publishes month-to-month terms with cancellation at any time, but does not publish a position on setup or offboarding charges. It does publish a deposit: 1 to 1.5 months of all monthly charges (salary, employer costs and fee) per hire, invoiced up front and refunded at offboarding. On a R600,000 package that is roughly $3,500 to $5,200 before the first payslip, and it is the largest difference in month-one cash between these two.
Deel also publishes an itemised South African employer cost of 2.80%, made up of UIF at 1.0%, SDL at 1.0%, workman's compensation at 0.2% and an employer liability administrative fee of 0.60%. The first three are statutory. The fourth is a Deel charge inside the employer-cost column; move it to the fee column when you compare.
RemoFirst publishes its reasoning for the price: working through vetted local partners rather than building its own entity network, and a flat rate with no minimums. Deel does not address the question.
The entity question, and two kinds of silence
Neither provider names the company that employs your South African staff member on its own pages. They arrive at that in opposite ways.
RemoFirst does not have owned entities and says so. Its EOR page devotes a section to the benefits of its local partner model, describing partners as payroll and compliance specialists with more than twenty years of experience, and it publishes a blog post arguing the case. One wrinkle sits on the same page: its FAQ says it hires through "our existing local entities or exclusive partners", which implies some owned entities exist without saying which countries. The South African partner is never named.
Deel says it employs through wholly-owned entities and says nothing at country level. A Deel South Africa company is on the CIPC register; Deel's own South Africa page does not mention it. Its country counts appear as 150-plus on most pages and 130-plus on the pricing page for EOR specifically.
So: one provider tells you it uses partners and will not name them. The other does not confirm South Africa on its own pages, although the public record does. Ask both for the registered name and CIPC number of the employing company, and check it yourself.
What $400 a month actually buys
Recruitment
Deel sells a talent marketplace, a network of third-party recruitment partners, alongside an applicant-tracking module at $14 per worker per month. It employs no recruiters and publishes no time-to-hire. RemoFirst offers neither, and its South African guidance lists sourcing your candidate as step one. If you have not found your person, Deel gives you a tool and a referral network; neither provider will find them for you.
Devices
Deel IT procures, ships, supports and recovers equipment as a developed product. RemoFirst offers equipment delivery for laptops and monitors as an add-on, without published South African delivery details.
Immigration
Deel Mobility handles visas directly. RemoFirst offers visa and work permit support as an add-on, published as covering 85-plus countries on its EOR page and 110-plus in its site navigation.
Platform
Deel publishes an HRIS, an open API, embedded and white-label deployments. RemoFirst publishes single sign-on and a platform for running payments and contracts, without the integration depth.
Scale
Deel is the larger and older company, with review counts in the thousands on both G2 and Trustpilot. RemoFirst was founded in 2021.
If you need most of that, the $599 buys things you will use. If you have your candidate, your own laptop supply and no visa requirement, the extra $400 a month is buying capability you will not use.
Support
RemoFirst states that every customer gets a dedicated account manager regardless of size. Deel describes in-house expert teams, with the number appearing as more than 2,000 globally on one page and 250-plus on its South Africa page, and does not commit to a named manager at the base tier.
For a company hiring one or two people, a named contact is likely to matter more than an expert pool, and RemoFirst commits to one at every size.
Both sites contradict themselves on hours. RemoFirst's EOR page describes support as available 24/7 for hiring managers and employees, while the FAQ on the same page lists 24/5.
Credibility for a young company
RemoFirst was founded in 2021, which normally invites caution. Two things offset it.
Its certification set is comprehensive for its size: ISO certification, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and Global Payroll Association membership. And its published client logos include Mastercard, Microsoft, BCG, Twilio, HubSpot, the University of Cambridge and the World Health Organization. Those are organisations with procurement processes, and their presence is a meaningful signal.
What Deel has here is volume rather than kind: more customers, more reviews and a longer operating history.
South African documentation
This is roughly even, with different weaknesses. Deel's employer cost breakdown is the most useful single piece of South African cost information published by either, and it names workers' compensation. Against that, its South Africa page carries a sentence about covering 150-plus countries including Belize, which is templated content that was never localised, and its published minimum wage and overtime threshold both sit behind current determinations.
RemoFirst's South African guide sets out UIF, SDL and COIDA rates, but it publishes less detail overall and no equivalent cost breakdown.
Neither names a South African medical aid scheme as a member benefit in the way a candidate would expect. RemoFirst sells RemoHealth, its own international plan covering medical, dental and vision, which is not the same thing as Discovery or Bonitas membership in the eyes of a South African candidate. Deel names Discovery Health as a local option, which is more useful when you are writing an offer.
Currency
Neither invoices in rand. RemoFirst's pages show eight invoicing currencies in one place and five in another, including sterling, euros and Canadian and Australian dollars. Deel publishes payments in 150-plus currencies. Ask both for the FX margin as a percentage, because two conversions between your currency and rand can cost more than you expect.
What both leave unanswered
Neither names the South African company that will employ your staff member on its own pages. RemoFirst publishes no deposit position; Deel publishes one. Neither states who represents the employer at the CCMA, who attends a disciplinary hearing, who bears the cost or who decides settlement.
Both also carry internal inconsistencies worth noting: Deel's country counts and expert headcounts differ across its own pages, and RemoFirst's support hours and visa coverage differ across a single page.

Which one to choose
Choose RemoFirst if
- Cost is the deciding factor
- You have already identified your candidate
- You want no setup or exit fees and no minimum term
- You want a named account manager without paying enterprise rates
- You need ISO and SOC 2 Type II for procurement
- You are hiring across more countries than Deel covers
Choose Deel if
- You want a talent marketplace and applicant tracking alongside employment
- You want devices procured and shipped properly
- You need visas handled in-house rather than through an add-on
- You need an HRIS or API integration
- Your procurement values scale, review volume and a published country-level cost breakdown
Consider something else if you want an owned or at least named South African entity, local offices, workspace, or documented CCMA representation. Neither provides any of that, and several South African specialists publish flat fees between these two while owning an entity in the country. See which ones match your priorities.
Questions to ask both
- Which registered company will employ my staff member, and what is its CIPC number?
- Is there a deposit or advance payroll funding requirement, how much, and when is it returned?Deel publishes 1 to 1.5 months of all charges; RemoFirst publishes nothing.
- What is the notice period to exit, and does anything change if I leave in the first year?
- Which medical aid scheme can my employee join, and what does it cost at this salary?
- What liability cover applies, and what does it exclude?
- What FX margin applies when converting my invoice currency into rand?
- Who represents me at the CCMA, who attends, who pays, and who decides settlement?
FAQs
$199 against $599 per employee per month, plus Deel's 0.60% administrative fee. Over a year, per employee, the gap is roughly $5,000. In month one, Deel's deposit of 1 to 1.5 months of all charges adds roughly $3,500 to $5,200 up front on a R600,000 package; RemoFirst publishes no deposit position.
It works through vetted local partner entities rather than building and maintaining its own, and publishes that reasoning. Deel does not publish a reason for its price.
Neither confirms one on its own pages. RemoFirst states it uses local partners and does not name the South African one. Deel says it employs through wholly-owned entities without confirming South Africa; a Deel South Africa company is on the CIPC register. Ask both for a registration number.
Neither. Deel offers a marketplace of third-party recruiters and an applicant-tracking tool at $14 per worker per month; RemoFirst treats sourcing as your first step.
RemoFirst states no setup, onboarding or termination fees, no annual contracts and no minimums, and publishes no deposit position. Deel does not publish a position on setup or offboarding, folds a 0.60% administrative charge into its published South African employer cost, and takes a deposit of 1 to 1.5 months of all charges, refunded at offboarding.
RemoFirst gives every customer a dedicated account manager regardless of size. Deel does not commit to a named manager at the base tier.
It was founded in 2021, and it publishes ISO certification, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR compliance and client logos including Mastercard, Microsoft, BCG and the World Health Organization. Do your own due diligence on the partner entity, which is where the real question sits.
RemoFirst, at 185-plus for EOR against Deel's 150-plus on most pages and 130-plus on its pricing page.
How we researched this
Employer of Record SA is an independent comparison service. We are not an EOR; we employ nobody, and no provider can pay for a position, a badge or a mention.
How we're funded. Some providers pay us a referral fee when you request a quote through this site. Fees never affect how a provider is assessed, where it appears, or whether it is listed at all. Read our full disclosure.
Everything above comes from each provider's own published material, checked on the date at the top of this page. Where the published record is silent or contradicts itself, we say so rather than guessing. Full detail on our methodology page.
