RemoFirst EOR Review

A published $199 a month with clean terms around it: no setup, termination or annual contract, no minimum headcount. The price is possible because RemoFirst employs through local partners rather than its own entities, and for South Africa the partner is not named.

Who RemoFirst suits

You already have your candidate. This is where RemoFirst makes sense. If cost is your main constraint, $199 a month with no setup, termination charge or minimum term is a low barrier to testing a South African hire. Go in knowing the employing company is a partner you cannot identify from anything published, and ask for its name before you sign.

You need someone found. Look elsewhere, or pair RemoFirst with a recruiter. Its own South Africa guide lists sourcing the candidate as your first step; there are no in-house recruiters, no candidate pool and no time-to-hire.

You already use an EOR in another country. RemoFirst covers 185-plus countries with no annual contract, so consolidating onto it is low-risk commercially. The trade is local depth: no South African office or hours, and a partner-delivered service.

Look elsewhere if you require an owned South African entity or at least a named employing company before signing, you want a documented CCMA position, you want a named South African medical aid scheme rather than an international plan, or you want HR support in South African hours from people based here.

What RemoFirst costs

WHERE THIS FEE SITS IN THE MARKET · published monthly EOR rates, per employee

Published rates on the scale: RemoFirst $199, $299, $459, $599, $699.

Published rates only. Several South African specialists publish nothing and quote after a call, and some charge a percentage of cost to company instead. The headline fee is rarely the whole cost.

Here is every cost line we could find for one RemoFirst hire in South Africa. Where RemoFirst publishes a figure it is shown; where it doesn't, the line says so. We do not add these up, because the fee is a starting figure and any deposit depends on your salary.

THREE THINGS TO GET IN WRITING FROM REMOFIRST

  • The South African partner entity's registered name and CIPC number, and which company carries liability for a late or incorrect filing
  • Whether a deposit or advance payroll funding is required, and its return terms
  • The South Africa rate at your salary level, with confirmation that no setup, onboarding or termination fees apply to your agreement

How soon your person starts

IF YOU HAVE A CANDIDATE

1-3 days (global)

Per the homepage FAQ, in most locations onboarding can happen in 1-3 days once all documentation is received and the contract approved. That is a global, conditional figure; the South Africa guide publishes no timeline. The comparison tool credits 48 hours on the lower bound, so plan on the paperwork, not the headline.

Working with RemoFirst

WHO YOU DEAL WITH

A dedicated account manager, which RemoFirst states every client receives regardless of size, plus embedded platform chat. The homepage promises a 15-minute response and a free first month if you do not hear back on time. Support is 24/7 on the EOR page and 24/5 in its FAQ. No South African hours, phone line or local contact are published, and whether the manager can act for the partner is not stated. Ask.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY

G2 4.5 out of 5 from 403 reviews at the time of our research. RemoFirst publishes several G2 badges alongside Fast Company and Inc. 5000 recognition.

WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG

RemoFirst publishes a termination capability covering notice, severance and documentation under local law, and says it provides guidance on compliant offboarding. Guidance is the operative word: nothing published says who represents you at the CCMA, who attends a hearing, who pays or who decides settlement, and under a partner model the answer may be a company you have not met.

LEAVING

No termination fees, no annual contract and no minimums, so the exit door is open. The notice period, and what happens to your employee's employment when you leave, are not published. Get both in writing.

South African compliance

RemoFirst employs through an unnamed local partner rather than its own entity, and says so openly. Its South Africa guide sets out UIF, SDL and COIDA rates and notes medical aid, provident fund contributions and the customary December 13th cheque as market norms. It states that it creates localised contracts aligned with local labour law, protects your IP and data, and runs compliant payroll with taxes and social contributions handled. EMP201, EMP501 and IRP5 are not named and the CCMA has no stated position, so ask which company files, which carries liability and who attends a hearing.

How RemoFirst scores on the ten needs

These are the same ten needs the comparison tool on this site asks you to choose from, and these are RemoFirst's ticks in it. A tick means RemoFirst met the published-evidence bar for that need; a dash means it didn't.

  • Met:Keeping costs down$199, with no setup, termination or annual contract and no minimums.
  • Met:Onboarding within 48 hoursHomepage FAQ: 1-3 days in most locations once documents are in and the contract approved. Credited on the lower bound; no SA figure.
  • Not met:Help finding candidatesNot offered. Sourcing the candidate is the client's first step in RemoFirst's own guide.
  • Not met:HR support on the ground in SANo South African office, staff or team evidenced; support is global.
  • Not met:SA labour law and CCMA coverPartner entity, unnamed, and no published position on CCMA representation or disciplinary handling.
  • Not met:A dedicated account managerRemoFirst states every client gets one, but publishes no South African hours, phone line or local contact, and the manager sits outside the partner that employs your hire. Short of the bar.
  • Met:Managing employee benefitsBenefits and health insurance through global providers in the fee; RemoHealth from $55. SA guide covers medical aid and provident fund contributions. No scheme named.
  • Not met:Providing office space and equipmentLaptop and monitor delivery as a paid add-on only; no office space or co-working.
  • Met:A self-service platform or appClient dashboard and employee portal for payroll, documents, time off and benefits; integrations and SSO; G2-reviewed.
  • Met:Hiring in other countries tooEOR in 185+ countries on the EOR page (180+ in the FAQ and SA guide).

Our overall impression

Where RemoFirst stands out

On price and terms the offer is clean. $199 a month with no setup fee, no termination fee, no annual contract and no minimum headcount is a genuinely low barrier for a company testing a South African hire.

It is also honest about how it gets there, publishing an argument for its partner model rather than obscuring it. The assurance layer (ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, Global Payroll Association membership and clients including Mastercard, Microsoft, BCG and the World Health Organization) is above what the price suggests for a company founded in 2021.

Where you should probe

The partner first. Your employee's legal employer would be a company you cannot identify or verify from anything published, and the chain between you, RemoFirst and that partner is where a dismissal, a CCMA referral or a filing error would have to travel.

Then the small inconsistencies: 24/7 against 24/5 support, 85-plus against 110-plus visa countries, eight against five invoicing currencies, 185-plus against 180-plus countries, a footer still dated 2024. None affects whether RemoFirst can employ someone in Cape Town; all mean the published record needs checking, not trusting.

Recruitment is absent by design, and for a difficult employment situation the saving against a local specialist is unlikely to cover the difference.
