RemoFirst vs Remote for South Africa
If cost is the constraint and you have your candidate, RemoFirst is a serious option at $199, with no setup, termination or minimum-term conditions published. If your procurement needs an owned entity, quantified liability cover and a named South African medical aid scheme, Remote provides all three and charges accordingly.

Compare providersWhere they actually differ
Who legally employs your staff member
This is the substantive difference, and both providers answer it.
Remote states on its South Africa page that it owns its own legal entity in the country, that it employs in-house rather than through third parties, and that all EOR services, including local specialist support, are provided internally. Its Local Terms name the company, Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd, with its registration number. Its homepage extends the owned-entity position to every market it operates in.
RemoFirst works through local partners and devotes a section of its EOR page to explaining why, describing partners as payroll and compliance specialists with more than twenty years of experience and arguing that this gives faster real-time insight on local employment law while cutting overhead. One wrinkle sits on the same page: its FAQ says it hires through "our existing local entities or exclusive partners", which implies some owned entities exist without saying where. The South African partner is never named.
The practical consequence is a chain. Under Remote, you deal with the company that employs your person, and you can look it up. Under RemoFirst, there is a third organisation between you and the employment, and you cannot identify it before a sales process. Ask RemoFirst for the partner's registered name and CIPC number.
Cost, and what the extra buys
$199 against $699 is a gap of $500 before anything else. Two things widen it:
Remote applies a mandatory employer provident fund contribution of 5% of base salary to all South African employees, fixed, with no employee opt-out. Retirement contributions are not a legal requirement for South African employers, so this is Remote's own policy rather than a statutory cost. On a R600,000 package, it adds roughly $139 a month. The money goes to your employee rather than to Remote, and it strengthens the offer they are comparing against a local job. It is still money you did not choose to spend unless you had planned to fund retirement anyway.
Remote also applies a benefits parity rule: any benefit you offer applies to every South African team member, so you cannot vary packages across seniority levels.
RemoFirst publishes no mandated contribution, and states there are no setup, onboarding or termination fees, no annual contracts and no employee minimums. Those are the cleaner published terms of the two, and they matter most on a first hire where you want the exit open. Remote publishes no position on setup, offboarding or minimum term at all.
On deposits the positions reverse. Remote states that it takes one only in exceptional, high-risk situations. RemoFirst publishes no deposit position, so ask before you budget.
Benefits your candidate will actually ask about
Remote publishes more here, and it is more useful than it first appears. It names Discovery plan tiers from Classic Smart through to Classic Comprehensive with day-to-day limits published. That means you can put a specific scheme and a specific level of cover into an offer letter. A South African candidate comparing your role against a local one will ask precisely this question.
RemoFirst sells RemoHealth, its own international plan covering medical, dental and vision. International cover is a legitimate product, and it is not the same as membership of a recognised South African medical aid scheme. If your candidate is weighing your offer against an employer offering Discovery or Bonitas, establish exactly what RemoHealth provides and whether a local alternative is available.
Protections and certification
Remote publishes liability cover described as unlimited indemnity for EOR customers with no stated caps, alongside a dedicated intellectual property protection product, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001.
RemoFirst publishes ISO certification, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR compliance and Global Payroll Association membership, and states that it protects intellectual property and data as part of its service, without quantifying liability cover.
For a company founded in 2021, RemoFirst's certification set is stronger than its age suggests. Remote's indemnity position is the more unusual of the two, and worth testing on what it excludes.
Integrations and platform
Remote publishes a Workday-certified integration, native connections to HiBob, BambooHR and Personio, a REST API and an MCP server, and other HR platforms run their own global employment products on its infrastructure.
RemoFirst publishes single sign-on and a platform for contracts, payroll and payments, without integration depth. If you need employment data flowing into your own systems, that is a real gap.
Coverage
RemoFirst publishes 185-plus countries for EOR (180-plus on some of its pages). Remote publishes 90-plus countries for EOR. If South Africa is one of many markets and some of them are unusual, RemoFirst reaches further.
Support
RemoFirst states that every customer gets a dedicated account manager regardless of size. Remote describes in-house local specialists and an Ask an Expert service, without committing to a named manager at the base tier.
For a company hiring one or two people, a named contact is likely to matter more than an expert pool, and RemoFirst commits to one at every size. Note that RemoFirst's own EOR page describes support as available 24/7 in one section and 24/5 in the FAQ directly below, so confirm which applies.
South African documentation
Neither is comprehensive, and they fall short in different places. Remote's South African guide covers the Labour Relations Act, statutory leave of 21 consecutive days, the notice ladder of one, two and four weeks, probation, misclassification risk and the requirement for accurate UIF, SDL and income tax deductions with SARS filing. COIDA is absent from its payroll breakdown, and the same page carries two different minimum wage figures.
RemoFirst's South African guide sets out UIF, SDL and COIDA rates, which covers the statutory ground more completely, with less detail overall.
Verify statutory figures against the Department of Employment and Labour rather than either page.

Which one to choose
Choose RemoFirst if
- Cost is the deciding factor
- You have already identified your candidate
- You want no setup or exit fees and no minimum term
- You want a named account manager without paying enterprise rates
- You are hiring in more countries than Remote covers
- You need ISO and SOC 2 Type II for procurement
Choose Remote if
- An owned South African entity is a requirement rather than a preference
- Procurement wants liability cover quantified
- You need to name a specific medical aid scheme in an offer letter
- You need Workday or another major HRIS integration
- A 5% employer retirement contribution fits what you intended to provide
Consider something else if you need candidates sourced, workspace provided, or documented dispute support. Neither offers any of that, and providers based in South Africa with their own entities publish flat fees between these two. See which ones match your priorities.
Questions to ask both
- Which registered company will employ my staff member, and what is its CIPC number?Remote publishes this; RemoFirst does not.
- Is there a deposit or advance payroll funding requirement, how much, and when is it returned?
- What is the notice period to exit, and does anything change if I leave in the first year?
- Which medical aid scheme can my employee join, and what does it cost at this salary?
- What liability cover applies, and what does it exclude?
- What FX margin applies when converting my invoice currency into rand?
- Who represents me at the CCMA, who attends, who pays, and who decides settlement?

How we researched this
Employer of Record SA is an independent comparison service. We are not an EOR; we employ nobody, and no provider can pay for a position, a badge or a mention.
How we're funded. Some providers pay us a referral fee when you request a quote through this site. Fees never affect how a provider is assessed, where it appears, or whether it is listed at all. Read our full disclosure.
Everything above comes from each provider's own published material, checked on the date at the top of this page. Where the published record is silent or contradicts itself, we say so rather than guessing. Full detail on our methodology page.
