Who Remote suits

You already have your candidate. A strong fit if confirmed owned-entity employment and a documented benefits package matter to you. Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd is named in Remote's Local Terms, the Discovery plan tiers are published, and the rate is on the South Africa page. Budget for the provident fund, and know that whatever benefits you offer apply to every South African hire.

You need someone found. Look elsewhere, or pair Remote with a recruiter. Remote Talent is a job marketplace where you post and candidates apply; Remote does not source, screen or place, and publishes no time-to-hire.

You already use an EOR in another country. Realistic to consolidate. Remote covers 90-plus countries through entities it says it owns outright, integrates natively with Workday, BambooHR and Personio, and publishes an API. If your current provider serves South Africa through a partner, Remote names the company that would employ your hire.

Look elsewhere if total cost in a single market is your primary constraint, you need to vary benefits between employees, retirement contributions must be optional, you need equity tooling without a Delaware-incorporated parent, or documented CCMA representation is a firm requirement.

WHERE THIS FEE SITS IN THE MARKET · published monthly EOR rates, per employee

Published rates on the scale: $199, $299, $459, $599, Remote $699.

Published rates only. Several South African specialists publish nothing and quote after a call, and some charge a percentage of cost to company instead. The headline fee is rarely the whole cost.

Here is every cost line we could find for one Remote hire in South Africa. Where Remote publishes a figure it is shown; where it doesn't, the line says so. We do not add these up, because two of them depend on your salary and the benefits you choose.

THREE THINGS TO GET IN WRITING FROM REMOTE

  • Your total monthly cost including the provident fund and the Discovery tier you choose
  • Confirmation that no reserve payment applies to you, and the pricing FAQ's answers on setup fees and FX rates
  • That Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd is the employing entity on your contract, and Remote's position on CCMA representation

How soon your person starts

IF YOU HAVE A CANDIDATE

2.3 days average

Remote's stated average, shown on its South Africa page with a footnote recording that it comes from internal customer data. It is a company-wide average, not a South African commitment; the same page notes standard onboarding may take 30 days. Independent reviewers in our evidence base report 3-7 business days, because every onboarding waits on Remote's legal review.

Working with Remote

WHO YOU DEAL WITH

A dedicated onboarding specialist, then in-house local specialists and an Ask an Expert service. No ongoing named account manager is published; independent reviews in our evidence base describe a ticket queue at the base tier with a dedicated contact reserved for larger accounts. No South African support team, hours or contact are published, though the Local Terms give a Johannesburg address. Ask about time-zone cover.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY

Remote states over 4,000 reviews across G2, Trustpilot and Capterra and a number-one ranking on G2.

WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG

Remote publishes unlimited indemnity cover for EOR customers with no stated caps, which is relevant to the financial exposure, and its guide covers termination and notice. There is no published position on who represents you at the CCMA, who pays or who decides settlement. Ask what the indemnity excludes, and get the CCMA position in writing.

LEAVING

No minimum headcount, and deposits only in exceptional cases. Minimum term, notice period and offboarding fees are not published, so ask for all three before you sign.

South African compliance

Remote employs through Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd, named with its registration number in its Local Terms, and states it owns 100% of its entities. Its South Africa guide covers the Labour Relations Act, written contracts, probation of three to six months, the one, two and four-week notice ladder and 21 consecutive days' statutory leave; IP is handled as a product. It states it manages tax withholding and SARS filing directly, with UIF, SDL and income tax deductions. COIDA, EMP501 and IRP5 are not named, the page carries two minimum-wage figures (R30.23 and a stale R25.42), and there is no position on CCMA representation, though unlimited indemnity cover is published.

How Remote scores on the ten needs

These are the same ten needs the comparison tool on this site asks you to choose from, and these are Remote's ticks in it. A tick means Remote met the published-evidence bar for that need; a dash means it didn't.

Our overall impression

Where Remote stands out

It answers the entity question at country level, naming Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd with a Johannesburg address. That single fact removes the largest unknown when you are choosing an EOR.

The protections are concrete (unlimited indemnity with no stated caps, an IP product, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001), and the benefits are named down to Discovery plan tiers and their day-to-day limits. Pricing sits on the South Africa page itself.

Where you should probe

The provident fund first. Published rather than hidden, and arguably good practice, but not a legal requirement and outside the $699. The benefits parity rule compounds it: you cannot dial benefits down for a junior hire once you have offered them to a senior one.

Then the local detail, which thins out where it does everywhere: COIDA absent from the payroll breakdown, EMP501 and IRP5 unnamed, no CCMA position, no named South African contact. The country guide's two minimum-wage figures are a reason to verify statutory numbers, not to doubt the service. For a company optimising total cost in one market, the fund and the fee together put Remote above most South African specialists. That is a real trade-off rather than a flaw.

Remote FAQs

Yes, on its own account. Its South Africa page states it owns its legal entity there and provides all EOR services in-house. Its Local Terms name the entity as Remote Technology South Africa (Pty) Ltd, registration 2021/768850/07, Bruma Lake Office Park, Johannesburg.

$699 per employee per month, published on the South Africa page; the en-gb Employer of Record page shows £559. Budget separately for the 5% employer provident fund contribution and any Discovery medical aid you select.

No. Remote applies a mandatory provident fund to all South African employees with a fixed 5% employer contribution and no employee opt-out. Employees may raise their own share to 27.5%. Retirement contributions are not legally compulsory in South Africa, so this is Remote's own requirement.

No. Remote states that any benefit offered applies to all team members in the country, so packages cannot be varied within your South African team.

Remote states an average onboarding time of 2.3 days, from its own customer data across all markets. Candidate notice periods are usually the longer constraint.

Employer of Record SA is an independent comparison service. We are not an EOR and we employ nobody.

How we're funded. Some providers pay us a referral fee when you request a quote through this site. Fees never affect how a provider is assessed, where it appears, or whether it is listed at all. Read our full disclosure.

Everything above comes from Remote's own published material, checked on the date at the top of this page. Where we could not find something, we say so rather than guess. Full detail on our methodology page.
