Who Oyster suits

You already have your candidate. A credible choice if you are remote-first, hiring across several countries, and good software and clean terms matter more to you than local depth. You get automated legal-reviewed agreements, a contract quality score before you send the offer, and no setup or offboarding fee. Budget for the deposit, and ask which entity will appear on the employment agreement before you commit.

You need someone found. Look elsewhere, or pair Oyster with a recruiter. There is no recruitment or talent sourcing of any kind.

You already use an EOR in another country. Oyster's natural fit. With 180-plus countries in its availability explorer, in-app equity management, a developer API and HRIS and ATS integrations, it consolidates well. For South Africa specifically, you are paying a top-of-market fee for infrastructure and buying local support by the hour.

Look elsewhere if South Africa is your only market and cost is a constraint, you need to know which entity employs your staff before signing, you want local HR support included rather than billed hourly, you need equipment shipped to South Africa, or documented CCMA representation is a requirement.

What Oyster costs

WHERE THIS FEE SITS IN THE MARKET · published monthly EOR rates, per employee

Published rates on the scale: $199, $299, $459, $599, Oyster $699.

Published rates only. Several South African specialists publish nothing and quote after a call, and some charge a percentage of cost to company instead. The headline fee is rarely the whole cost.

Here is every cost line we could find for one Oyster hire in South Africa. Where Oyster publishes a figure it is shown; where it doesn't, the line says so rather than guessing. We do not add these up, because the deposit depends on your salary and the hourly advisory depends on what goes wrong.

THREE THINGS TO GET IN WRITING FROM OYSTER

  • Which legal entity will appear on your South African employment agreement, and whether it is owned or a partner
  • What falls inside routine termination processing and what triggers People Partner Services charges, including CCMA representation
  • The South African benefits package cost, and which medical aid scheme and retirement fund your employee would join

How soon your person starts

IF YOU HAVE A CANDIDATE

As fast as 48 hours (global)

Oyster's EOR page and homepage say "onboard as fast as 48 hours", with country-specific onboarding managers to guide you through. It is a global best-case claim; the South Africa hiring guide publishes no timeline of its own, so there is no slower local figure to override it, and the comparison tool ticks 48 hours on that basis. Plan on the paperwork, not the headline.

Working with Oyster

WHO YOU DEAL WITH

A Sales Executive and a Customer Success Manager as your go-to partners, per Oyster's compare page, with day-to-day questions answered by Lifecycle Support Specialists through a ticketing system and country-specific onboarding managers during setup. Oyster does not state that every client gets a dedicated named manager, and no response SLA or South African hours are published, which is why the account-manager tick below is a dash.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY

G2 4.4 out of 5 from 1,588 reviews at the time of our research, alongside a wall of G2 badges including leader placements and awards for easiest admin and best estimated ROI.

WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG

Compliant termination processing is handled by Oyster specialists at no extra charge, with progress and final pay tracking. Investigations and performance issues are handled through People Partner Services at $300 an hour. There is no published position on who represents you at the CCMA, who attends, who pays or who decides settlement. Ask what the $8 million liability cover includes and excludes.

LEAVING

Month to month, with a published right to end any assignment agreement on 30 days' written notice and no offboarding fee. The deposit comes back 30 days after all termination matters are fully resolved. What commitment attaches to discounted annual billing is not published.

South African compliance

Oyster does not say who employs your South African hire: its help centre states the entity is identified in the employment agreement, and its 80%-plus owned-entity figure is global. Contracts are its strongest area: automated, legally reviewed, benchmarked by a contract quality score, with localised IP models. Its South Africa guide puts statutory employer cost at around 2% of gross salary (SDL, UIF, workers' compensation) and covers the 45-hour week, notice periods, severance of one week per completed year and the customary 13th cheque. EMP201, EMP501, IRP5 and COIDA registration are not named and the CCMA is not mentioned; contested matters sit in the hourly add-on.

How Oyster scores on the ten needs

These are the same ten needs the comparison tool on this site asks you to choose from, and these are Oyster's ticks in it. A tick means Oyster met the published-evidence bar for that need; a dash means it didn't.

  • Met:Onboarding within 48 hours"Onboard as fast as 48 hours" on the EOR page and homepage; the South Africa guide gives no slower figure. A global best-case claim.

Our overall impression

Where Oyster stands out

The product is genuinely well built. The contract quality score benchmarks your offer against local statutory requirements before you send it. That is useful precisely because an international employer usually has no idea whether a South African package is competitive. Equity grant support with tax guidance in-app is a second strength.

The assurance layer is specific: liability insurance quantified at over $8 million, SOC 2, GDPR, legal-reviewed agreements and localised IP models. Publishing what is not charged (setup, onboarding, HR expert access, termination processing) is more informative than a rate alone, and the B Corp certification will matter to some buyers on its own terms.

Where you should probe

The entity position is the most unusual thing in this review. The answer to the single most important question about an EOR arrives at the point of signature, and with a global 80% owned-entity claim, an explorer that does not say which countries are owned, and no South African entity findable, a buyer has nothing to verify before committing.

Cost compounds it. $699 plus a deposit of roughly one month's total cost of service, plus benefits as a paid add-on, plus $300 an hour when a matter becomes contested, is materially above the headline for a platform whose South African content is a generic hiring guide.

The EOR page's metadata advertises 180-plus countries while its body says 120-plus twice. Small, but telling.
